More Reviews from Urban Rag #25
Lucinda Bright “Some Big Secret b/w Crush” - Face Down Suite #302/320 3317 Brunswick Pk. Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. I wish I had caught some of Lucinda Bright’s shows down in New Hope and around NJ. Leigh Woolston’s voice is beautiful and seemingly well trained, and the band’s got spunk. The band plays together with a natural ease which does not betray the bands short history. It’s really nice. The swirly guitar solo on “Crush” and the syncopated drums are the stuff you don’t hear often enough!

Maryjane - self titled - Bear Records 295 Greenwich St. #105, NYC, 10007. This is the first "Disk Only Series" or "DOSE" release from this New York label. The high concept this week is to do away with the jewel box. Something I don't see happening with a thin plastic sleeve for very specific marketing reasons. Of course the long box was debated for years too. Bear always releases quality stuff, interesting music with fuzzy guitars and belly-bopping bass lines. It is alternative. That's always one of the first words to come to mind when I pop a Bear cd in. The over-modulated vocals and up tempo tunes are definitively "alternative." The squealing feedback intros and snarly harmonic lyrics are all cool. Quite an ep.

More Fire For Burning People... sitting breathless in new chairs - Ruido Records P.O.B. 4313 Richmond, VA 23220. This one started off real experimentally then took a turn for noisy, fuzzy, feedbacky rock and roll. I like it. Lots of energy. The sound really is diverse too. Some songs are slow and hauntingly melodic, some are more nasty. One even reminded me of the quasi-improvised nature of some bluesy Workdogs tunes. You can hear the sweat dripping off these guys. It’s as though the CD was recorded in a boiler room. Then of course, there are a few cool somewhat psychedelic surprises for the patient (mental or otherwise).
