why we like ani difranco
I was introduced to Ani DiFranco’s music in 1995. I lived in a ramshackle farmhouse in Yellow Springs, OH with 6 other people. We worked at an environmental center and we were all doing what we could to change the world. Ani’s music spoke to our very souls.
She grappled with all the important social issues of the time, dug deep, and brought forth answers and questions in beautiful and poignant prose. Her words became effective weapons against the quid-pro-quo and political powers that be. They became a powerful tool for the defense of all underclasses struggling to survive -- fighting against great odds of institutionalized racism, classism, sexism, prejudice, bigotry, closed and numbed minds.

Nearing 10 years later, she is still at it, strong as ever! We, the fighters for peace, justice, equality, and freedom of choice and voice can find hope, encouragement and validation in each new album. Evolve, the latest, and last year’s So Much Shouting So Much Laughter are no exception. The latter, another loaded double-cd release.

Her lyrics are energized with a sink-your-teeth-into-it activism. She is blessedwith an intelligent voice that reaches out across the masses, speaks directly and bluntly, wakes us up, and makes us think!. I have moved beyond the ramshackle farmhouse, but I am still doing my best to change the world. Ani takes the social and personal issues of our time and sings to my soul.
