Ani DiFranco “Revelling/Reckoning” Righteous Babe Records. Constantly touring, and continually recording, DiFranco must have figured the only way she could keep up was to release a double CD - apparently recorded in a new home-based studio. More musical than the previous release, these songs run the gamut from love songs to other trouble, including one cleverly wrapped in an automotive nightmare analogy. “I love us both but I’m at wit’s end. Where does your compromise begin and mine end?” That’s the line she sings after “I keep pulling over and looking under the hood,” in “Kazoointoit” a quirky number on Revelling disc, that seems to have been at least partially inspired by a telephone answering machine message (included as intro). The song seems definitive DiFranco with processed vocals, jazz beat and horns - though no DiFranco guitar. Two consecutive CDs might be a little too much DiFranco for one sitting, so take my lead and shuffle these 29 tracks in with other underexposed women. This came out in the spring of 2001, so fairly new. I’m waiting to hear what Sept. 11 motivated DiFranco to tape in the middle of the night. Maybe will at the Mid Hudson Civic Center www.righteousbabe.com - Ment.
