Merry Geng Candy @ La Mama Galleria, Spring 2001. The exhibit, Candy, contained more than two dozen larger than life specimens in 2D. Among my favorites, paintings of Swedish fish pursued by gummy sharks, fruit slices of the sort you find in the supermarket next to matzo, those magnificent marshmallow peeps from the Just-Born candy factory, that show their pink, purple, or blue heads each year around Easter. Gengs work is crisply primitive, favoring general representations without looking to be realistic -- like Warhols soup cans. It has meaning to me, thats mine. Thats personal to me, says Geng of her hunger-inspiring work. You should interpret it. There should always be a space, youre the one to complete it. This exhibit is down, but there will be more, watch that space for future signs of Gengs life, or Geng herself. - Ment
